Arrest of Former Presidential Candidate
Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, a former presidential candidate, was arrested in Kinshasa on Tue, Oct 17, 2023. The People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) expressed serious concerns regarding the conditions surrounding his detention. Additionally, the offices of the Common Front for Congo (CFC) coalition were subjected to a nighttime raid.
Shadary serves as the second-in-command of the PPRD and was the CFC's candidate in the 2018 presidential election, where he finished third behind the incumbent president, Felix Tshisekedi. The PPRD was established by former president Joseph Kabila, who governed the DRC until 2019. Earlier this year, Kabila was sentenced to death in absentia for treason, linked to alleged associations with the M23 rebel group. Despite his exile, Kabila continues to engage in DRC politics by interacting with opposition figures in Nairobi.
