Oyo State Government Condemns Yoruba Nation Agitators

The Oyo State Government has denounced as treasonable the actions of self-acclaimed Yoruba Nation agitators who raised their flag on the building that houses the state House of Assembly.

Oyo is one of Nigeria's 36 states, located in the southwest of the country where the Yoruba ethnic group forms the majority of the population. The state capital is Ibadan, a major commercial centre.

According to Vanguard Nigeria, the agitators targeted both the legislative complex and the governor's office in the incident. State officials said the move amounted to a direct challenge to Nigeria's sovereignty.

Treason is a serious offence under Nigerian law, carrying severe penalties. The government's statement underscores the authorities' determination to maintain national unity in the face of separatist campaigns.

Various Yoruba self-determination groups have been active in the region for years, sometimes calling for an independent Yoruba nation. Such movements often cite perceived marginalisation within the Nigerian federation.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between federal authorities and sub-national identity-based campaigns across parts of Nigeria. Similar agitations exist in other regions, including among Igbo communities in the southeast.

Nigerian security forces have previously clashed with members of such groups, resulting in arrests and prosecutions. The Oyo statement serves as a warning against further attempts to challenge state institutions.

The state government has not indicated whether any arrests have been made in connection with the flag-hoisting incident.
