Pope Leo XIV delivered his inaugural Christmas Day message on Thu, Dec 25, 2023, emphasizing the need for "peace and consolation" for victims of injustices, political instability, religious persecution, and terrorism. His message highlighted regions such as Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Congo.
The Pope advocated for dialogue to tackle challenges in Latin America, reconciliation efforts in Myanmar, the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia, and aid for individuals affected by natural disasters in South Asia and Oceania.
During the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" address, which translates to "From the City to the World," Pope Leo XIV addressed approximately 26,000 individuals from the loggia overlooking St. Peter's Square. This address marked the first occasion for the U.S.-born pontiff.
Despite initial inclement weather during the papal Mass inside St. Peter's Basilica, conditions improved by the time Pope Leo XIV addressed the crowd and took a brief tour of the square in the popemobile.

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo led the Christmas Day Mass from the central altar beneath the balustrade of St. Peter’s Basilica, which was decorated with floral garlands and red poinsettias. White flowers were placed at the feet of a statue of Mary, mother of Jesus, whose birth is commemorated on Christmas Day.
In his homily, the Pope emphasized that peace can only be achieved through dialogue. Thousands attended the Mass, capturing the event on their smartphones during the opening procession.
This Christmas season marks the conclusion of the Holy Year celebrations, which are set to end on Sat, Jan 6, 2024, coinciding with the Catholic Epiphany holiday that commemorates the visit of the three wise men to the infant Jesus in Bethlehem.
