Launch of Nelson Mandela Rules Training Academy
On Wed, Feb 10, 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa inaugurated the Nelson Mandela Rules Training Academy at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility. This institution is the first in Africa dedicated to the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Nelson Mandela Rules. These guidelines aim to ensure dignity, fairness, and humane treatment for individuals deprived of their liberty.
The academy is intended to serve as a knowledge hub for South Africa, the Southern African region, and the global correctional community. It will focus on education, skills development, and rehabilitation programs that prepare inmates for societal reintegration. Additionally, it supports individuals serving long sentences in pursuing personal growth and self-improvement, aligned with Nelson Mandela's values.
