Rights groups urge Senegal authorities to protect LGBT community amid wave of homophobia

Senegal: Legislative and Social Developments Regarding LGBT Rights

In Senegal, recent incidents have highlighted ongoing legal and social challenges concerning LGBT rights. On a recent date, 12 individuals were detained in Dakar under accusations related to "acts against nature" and the deliberate transmission of HIV. Those arrested include a notable television reporter and a musician.

The arrests have intensified media scrutiny, which has, in turn, heightened fear and stigma within the LGBT community. Additionally, health workers specializing in HIV care express concern about potential legal implications through contact traces found on the detainees' devices.

Current legislation in Senegal penalizes "unnatural acts" with imprisonment of up to five years. Despite attempts to enhance these penalties, recent parliamentary proposals have not been successful.

A conservative organization, And Samm Djikko Yi, is advocating for stricter laws against homosexuality. The group has announced its intention to initiate a nationwide campaign should the government fail to enact new legislation by April.

International human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, are calling on the Senegalese authorities to release the detained individuals and to abolish laws perceived as discriminatory.
