Since a series of coups between 2020 and 2023, Niger, along with Burkina Faso and Mali, has developed closer ties with Russia, while experiencing strained relations with Western countries. Previously, the Russian ambassador to Niger was stationed in Mali, but President Vladimir Putin appointed Voropayev as the ambassador to Niamey, Niger's capital, in August of the previous year.
Russia has been providing support to Niger in its ongoing fight against jihadist militants. This follows a request from the Nigerien military government for the withdrawal of US and French troops previously involved in counterinsurgency operations within the country.
