According to Mozambique's Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction, the flooding has resulted in 103 fatalities and displaced over 650,000 individuals. ActionAid has raised concerns regarding the potential for cholera and other water-borne diseases in camps currently housing approximately 100,000 people.
Recent research by the World Weather Attribution has indicated that human-induced climate change has exacerbated the heavy rains and flooding in southern Africa, including Mozambique. This extreme weather event has been linked to a year's worth of rainfall occurring within a 10-day period, leading to extensive damage to housing and infrastructure.

The study categorizes the recent downpour as a rare event, suggesting an increase in the frequency of severe rainstorms. This phenomenon has been intensified by the La Niña weather pattern, which naturally brings increased rainfall to southern Africa. However, the current conditions are exacerbated by a warmer atmosphere.
Dr. Izidine Pinto from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, a co-author of the study, noted the challenges in quantifying the exact extent of climate change's impact. Nonetheless, there is a consensus that the intensity of the rainfall has increased by approximately 40% due to human activities, transforming typical heavy rain into devastating downpours beyond the adaptive capacity of local communities.
