On Thursday, Senegal's Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the recent sentencing of 18 Senegalese football supporters by a Moroccan court. These individuals received prison sentences ranging from three months to one year and fines up to $545. The charges were related to a pitch invasion during the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco in January, involving accusations of violence and property damage.

Prime Minister Sonko emphasized the unfortunate nature of this situation, stating that it extends beyond the realm of sports. He expressed disappointment over the impact on the diplomatic relations between Morocco and Senegal, which are traditionally amicable. He noted that Senegal had taken necessary steps to facilitate the release of the supporters.

Sonko suggested that it would be beneficial if Moroccan authorities, including the king, consider pardoning the individuals involved. He also mentioned existing agreements that could allow the Senegalese supporters to serve their sentences in their home country, should a pardon not be granted.

During the match in question, an incident occurred where Senegalese fans attempted to breach the pitch following a disputed penalty call, resulting in clashes with Moroccan security personnel. Despite the tensions, the Senegalese team ultimately secured a victory by defeating Morocco 1-0 in extra time.
