A Senegalese soldier was killed and six others were wounded in the Casamance region during military operations targeting cannabis fields near The Gambia, according to a statement released by the armed forces on Thursday.

The military encountered a group of armed individuals in the Kadialock area. The incident occurred on Wednesday, with the initial report indicating one soldier's death and six injuries. The statement also noted that some of the attackers were killed during the confrontation.

The army continues its efforts to combat cannabis cultivation, pursue armed groups, and ensure the security of local populations and their property in the region.

Casamance, located in the southernmost part of Senegal, is geographically separated from the rest of the country by The Gambia. The region has a unique cultural and linguistic heritage, stemming from its history as a Portuguese colony.

Authorities have accused rebels in the area of engaging in illicit cannabis and timber trafficking. It is believed that these groups often seek refuge in neighboring The Gambia or Guinea-Bissau.

Casamance has experienced one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts since December 1982, when armed separatists began their rebellion. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and significant economic disruption. However, violence has decreased considerably in recent years.

In February, a peace agreement was signed between separatists and Senegalese authorities, marking the first public negotiations since the new government took office in March of the previous year.
