The victims were part of a group of 18 traders visiting Burkina Faso to purchase tomatoes. The attackers reportedly separated the men from the women before commencing gunfire. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the interior minister, stated that almost all the male traders were killed, and their bodies were burned along with their vehicle.
Among the group, three men and one woman sustained injuries, while the remaining seven women managed to escape unharmed. The deceased were buried on Mon in Burkina Faso, with the surviving female traders present as witnesses. Due to security challenges, Ghanaian officials could not access the site.

Following the attack, Burkina Faso authorities reclaimed control of the town after several hours. They have committed to providing a military escort to transfer the injured survivors to Ghana’s mission in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.
Efforts to seek comments from Burkina Faso's military leadership have not yet yielded a response. It is noted that Islamist militant groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State have been increasingly active in Burkina Faso, contributing to regional instability within the Sahel.
