Seychellois voters participated in a presidential runoff election on Sat, with incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan contesting against challenger Patrick Herminie. The runoff was necessitated after the initial vote, held two weeks prior, did not result in an outright majority for either candidate. Herminie had secured 48.8% of the votes, while Ramkalawan obtained 46.4%.

Concerns regarding voter turnout and fairness were raised following the first round. According to some voters, including banker Bertrand Barbier, the initial vote appeared skewed due to low participation levels. Another resident, Martin Kennedy, emphasized the significance of the runoff, noting its potential impact on the country's governance over the next five years.

Patrick Herminie, representing the United Seychelles Party, aims to regain leadership after his party's long-standing rule from 1977 to 2020. During the previous election cycle, Ramkalawan, affiliated with the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa coalition, emerged victorious. His presidency faces challenges related to environmental issues, heroin addiction, rising living costs, and foreign land lease concerns.

The election results, anticipated on Sun, could lead to unified executive and legislative governance if Herminie wins. Conversely, a victory for Ramkalawan may result in a divided government, with the opposition controlling the legislature.
