Sierra Leone Declares End of Mpox Epidemic

On Mon, Oct 2, 2023, Sierra Leone officially ended its Mpox epidemic, which had persisted for two years, resulting in over 5,000 cases and 60 fatalities.

The health emergency was initially announced following two confirmed cases outside the capital, Freetown. Despite the official end of the epidemic, survivors continue to experience societal stigma and challenges reintegrating into their communities.

Many survivors report experiencing rejection and discrimination, often due to widespread misinformation. This has affected their personal lives and professional opportunities. Efforts are underway to combat these issues through advocacy and education.

Nelson Johnson, a survivor who recovered in May, is working with the Sierra Leone Epidemic Action Network to raise awareness and address misinformation. Johnson emphasizes the importance of community engagement to educate the public about the reality of Mpox and reduce stigma.

Hannah Abibu, another survivor, shares her struggles with finding employment and basic necessities due to ongoing stigma. These personal accounts highlight the need for continued support and education.

According to Dr. John Abu Bakarr Conteh of the FCC Mpox Treatment Center, 99% of the infected population recovered. The response included multiple facets such as psychosocial support, logistics, and security, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive care beyond case management.

The epidemic presented unique challenges, including rare cases of genital lesions, which contributed to heightened stigma and transmission concerns. Mpox is a zoonotic disease transmitted from animals to humans and between individuals.
