Suspension of Social Media Platforms in Gabon

On Tue, the High Authority for Communication in Gabon announced the suspension of social media platforms until further notice. This decision aims to address the dissemination of "defamatory, hateful and insulting content" that is contributing to societal conflict and division.

The spokesperson highlighted issues such as the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data. These activities are seen as destabilizing government institutions and threatening democratic progress.

The regulator emphasized that freedom of expression, including freedom of comment and criticism, remains a fundamental right in Gabon. However, the specifics of which social media platforms will be affected have not been disclosed.

President Brice Oligui Nguema is confronting social unrest following his assumption of office last year. Since December, teachers have been striking over pay and conditions, with protests expanding to other public sectors such as health, higher education, and broadcasting.
