Water Management Collaboration between Somaliland and Israel

Somaliland is facing severe drought conditions, prompting local farmers to seek assistance from Israel in managing water resources. The prolonged dry spells have left farmland barren, jeopardizing the livelihoods of many in the region.

The Lallays reservoir, a critical water source near the capital Hargeisa, remains dry, with no rainfall recorded since mid-2022. This has led to a challenging situation for local farmers, many of whom rely solely on rain-fed agriculture.

In December, Israel recognized Somaliland's independence, marking a significant diplomatic development. In response to the water crisis, Israel has extended an invitation to Somaliland's water sector workers for training. The initial group of 25 personnel has already departed for this program. Additionally, Israeli experts are scheduled to visit Somaliland to assist in the installation of water management technologies.

Israel's expertise in water management, including recycling nearly 90% of its wastewater and operating large-scale seawater desalination plants, is highly regarded. This collaboration aims to enhance Somaliland's agricultural capacity, which currently stands at only 3% of land under cultivation.

While awaiting international assistance, some local farmers have begun adopting new techniques to mitigate the impact of drought. For instance, Muhammad Mohamad Ismail has invested in constructing a concrete reservoir to secure water for his fruit trees. Despite the financial burden, such efforts highlight the critical importance of water in sustaining agricultural productivity.

Overall, the ongoing collaboration with Israel is expected to provide Somaliland with the necessary tools and knowledge to improve its water management practices, thereby supporting the local agricultural economy amid challenging climatic conditions.
