South Africa has dispatched a team of five experienced investigators to Paris to collaborate with French authorities in examining the circumstances surrounding the death of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa.

The ambassador, aged 58, was found deceased in the inner courtyard of the Hyatt Regency hotel on Tuesday morning, following a fall from the 22nd floor. The incident occurred after Mthethwa's wife reported him missing on Monday, prompted by a concerning message she had received from him.

National police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, has confirmed the deployment of seasoned officers to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation. Although initial findings suggest the possibility of a deliberate act, concerns about foul play remain under consideration.

Mthethwa's career included various roles, some of which were marked by controversy. He was connected to former South African President Jacob Zuma, who is currently facing legal proceedings on corruption charges. Mthethwa was named in several judicial inquiries concerning misconduct.

During his tenure as police minister, Mthethwa was involved in the 2012 Marikana incident, where 34 miners were fatally shot by police. Most recently, he was mentioned in testimony related to political interference in policing, with accusations of obstructing justice during 2011.

The Madlanga Commission, which is investigating these claims, has not confirmed whether Mthethwa was contacted to provide testimony before his death.

The family of the late ambassador is presently awaiting the necessary formalities to repatriate his remains from France.
