South Africa: state-owned utility Eskom makes first profit in eight years

South Africa's state-owned utility company, Eskom, has reported a profit of 16 billion rand for the financial year ending on Sun, Mar 31, 2025. This marks the first full-year profit since 2017, following a loss of 55 billion rand in the previous year.

Eskom significantly reduced the frequency of power cuts, recording only 13 days of outages in the last financial year, compared to over 300 days in the preceding year.

The company has announced plans to reinvest its profits into electricity infrastructure. However, the debt owed by municipalities, which account for 42% of Eskom's sales, remains a concern for future financial stability.
