South Africa: U.S. aims to process 4,500 refugee applications each month

The U.S. administration has outlined plans to process 4,500 refugee applications from South Africa, as indicated in a U.S. contracting document. This initiative is part of a broader policy focus, although applications from other regions have seen reductions.

The administration has stated concerns regarding discrimination faced by white South Africans, which has influenced this resettlement decision. Chris Landau, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, emphasized the U.S. commitment to opposing racial persecution and supporting affected individuals through this program.

However, the South African government has rejected claims of persecution against white citizens. Despite this, the U.S. administration maintains its position on the issue, citing a lack of adequate measures by the South African government to ensure the rights and safety of its citizens. Consequently, refugee status has been granted under U.S. domestic law.

The South African Chamber of Commerce reported that approximately 67,000 individuals expressed interest in relocating last year, reflecting significant interest in the program.
