South Africa has agreed not to interfere with a U.S. refugee program involving the relocation of white South Africans to the United States. This agreement followed a closed-door meeting on Thu, Dec 23, 2021, after an incident involving South African authorities at a U.S. refugee processing site in Johannesburg.

During the meeting, South African officials communicated to the U.S. that while they may not support claims of genocide against white South Africans, they would not obstruct their emigration rights. This program was initiated under the administration of President Donald Trump, who prioritized the immigration of Afrikaners due to alleged racial persecution.

Recent diplomatic tensions have affected the relationship between the U.S. and South Africa. Issues arose following President Trump’s confrontation with President Cyril Ramaphosa over the genocide allegations and the exclusion of South Africa from upcoming G20 meetings.

Despite the raid in December, the U.S. State Department confirmed the continuation of refugee operations. It noted an increase in Afrikaner arrivals in the U.S. during December, with projections indicating further increases in January. South Africa’s foreign ministry stated there were no negotiations with Washington regarding the program.
