South African court clears sale of Nelson Mandela artefacts

The South African Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled against the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) in its effort to halt the sale and export of items associated with Nelson Mandela.

SAHRA sought to prevent the export of approximately 70 items to the United States for auction, claiming these items were part of the national heritage.

The items are owned by Makaziwe Mandela, Nelson Mandela's eldest daughter, and Christo Brand, a former Robben Island prison warden.

The court found that SAHRA's interpretation of heritage law was overly broad. The agency did not sufficiently justify the classification of these items as protected heritage objects, whereas the owners provided detailed reasons for their stance.

Makaziwe Mandela expressed approval of the ruling, emphasizing the family's dedication to preserving Mandela's legacy. No definitive decision has been reached regarding the sale of the items, initially intended to fund a memorial garden at Mandela's grave in Qunu.

The government has not announced any further legal actions. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has yet to provide comments on the matter.

Nelson Mandela, who passed away in 2013 at 95, was released from prison in 1990, became South Africa's first black president in 1994, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his efforts in ending apartheid.
