South African rowing team to makes history in Boston regatta

Historic Participation in Head of the Charles Regatta

Four South African rowers are set to make history by competing in the Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston, United States. This marks the first time an all-Black African team will compete in the event, which is the largest three-day rowing event worldwide in terms of participation.

The team comprises Lwazi-Tsebo Zwane, Lebone Mokheseng, Sepitle Leshilo, and Sheldon Krishnasamy. They will compete against elite rowers, including teams from prestigious U.S. universities.

Zwane expressed his surprise at being part of the first South African minority crew at the regatta, stating, "To be one of the first and few minority crews feels like making history. It is life-changing and somewhat surreal."

According to team coach Michael Ortlepp, their presence in Boston serves as an example to the younger generation of what is achievable.

The team's involvement is part of efforts to increase inclusivity in rowing, a sport traditionally dominated by White athletes. Ken Gliddon, president of Western Cape Rowing, emphasized that the team was selected based on merit and is not merely participating for visual representation.

The rowers hope that their participation in the 4.7km regatta will inspire the next generation of South African rowers.
