Human Rights Violations in South Sudan
Reports of human rights violations in South Sudan have raised significant concerns. According to the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Seif Magango, recent incidents have resulted in the loss of more than 160 civilian lives.
On Thu, Mar 1, 2023, fighters from the Bul Nuer ethnic group reportedly killed at least 139 civilians in Abiemnom locality, Ruweng Administrative Area. On Wed, Feb 21, 2023, 21 civilians were killed by government forces in Panko village, Ayod County, Jonglei State. The attack occurred after soldiers deceived civilians into gathering with the promise of food aid, then opened fire. On the same day, in Thiam village of Wau Payam, Western Bahr al Ghazal State, four civilians were reportedly tied up and beheaded by soldiers, including an elderly man, a woman, a boy, and a girl.
Local officials have reported an attack in the north of the country on Sunday, resulting in at least 178 fatalities. The attack was carried out by unidentified men.
Reports of human rights violations in South Sudan have raised significant concerns.
An immediate ceasefire has been called to mitigate further violence. The spokesperson emphasized the necessity of a negotiated resolution to the conflict. Parties involved are urged to refrain from targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to ensure the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid, in compliance with international law.
Government forces are currently engaged in efforts to reclaim territory from forces loyal to First Vice-President Riek Machar, who has been suspended following accusations of plotting to overthrow President Salva Kiir.
