Following the Taliban government's takeover in 2021, women's sports were banned in Afghanistan, leading to many players fleeing the country. Prior to these events, Afghanistan had 25 women players under contract, most of whom have since relocated to Australia. The national team last played an international match in 2021.
In May 2025, FIFA approved the formation of the Afghan Women's Refugee Team, led by coach Pauline Hamill. The team, named "Afghan Women United," competed in the four-team FIFA Unites: Women's Series tournament, which includes teams from Tunisia and Libya.
