A drone strike attributed to Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 12 others on Wed, Oct 18, 2023, in the southern Kordofan city of El-Rahad, according to a medical source.
The Kordofan region has become a major battleground in the ongoing conflict between the RSF and the regular army since April 2023. The city of El-Rahad is strategically located on the axis connecting El-Obeid, the North Kordofan state capital, to the White Nile river, which is the army's primary route to the capital, Khartoum.
After being retaken by the army in February, there have been continuous efforts by the RSF to regain control, including launching successive drone strikes along the eastern highway, which connects the western region of Darfur to the rest of Sudan.
The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 11 million people, creating significant humanitarian challenges. The country is effectively divided, with the army controlling the north, center, and east, while the RSF and allies hold the west and parts of the south.
The Kordofan region has become a major battleground in the ongoing conflict between the RSF and the regular army since April 2023.
Recent developments indicate a shift in balance, with the army breaking RSF sieges in South Kordofan cities such as Dilling and Kadugli. These cities have faced severe violence, with hundreds of thousands of residents at risk of starvation due to ongoing drone strikes.
Data from the UN's International Organization for Migration indicates that over 115,000 people have been displaced from the end of October to February. The RSF and the army have exchanged drone strikes over large areas, resulting in significant casualties. Within a two-week period, 90 civilians were killed and 142 injured, according to UN rights chief Volker Turk.
Targets have included a World Food Programme convoy, markets, health facilities, and residential areas in North and South Kordofan. The World Health Organization reported that three health facilities in South Kordofan were attacked in the first week of February, resulting in 30 fatalities.
