Sudanese Army Secures Kadugli After Prolonged Siege

The Sudanese army has announced the successful entry into Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, following a prolonged siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This development marks the end of a blockade lasting over two years.

The military reported that this advancement was achieved through an intensive operation aimed at reopening a vital route connecting Kadugli to the nearby town of Dilling. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto leader of Sudan, confirmed that this operation has established a crucial supply line to the city, which is experiencing severe famine conditions.

General al-Burhan emphasized the military's commitment to continuing operations throughout Sudan, stating, "The armed forces will reach any place in Sudan."

While affirming support for peace initiatives, al-Burhan declared that the military government would not endorse a ceasefire with the RSF as long as any cities remain besieged. He stated, "There is no truce that strengthens the enemy [Rapid Support Forces], no ceasefire that allows this militia to get back on its feet again."

As of now, there has been no response from the RSF regarding recent developments.

Since being expelled from Khartoum in 2025, the RSF has concentrated efforts on the Kordofan region and the city of el-Fasher. The latter was the military’s last significant foothold in Darfur until it was overtaken by the RSF in October.

The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, following a power struggle between the military and the RSF, which escalated into widespread hostilities. According to the United Nations, the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 40,000 casualties and has contributed to a severe humanitarian crisis globally.
