In Mukurweini County, a memorial was held for Charles Waithaka, aged 31, who died in Russia on Mon, Dec 25, 2023. With no repatriation options available, his family organized a symbolic funeral.

During the ceremony, Waithaka's portrait was placed in the location where his casket would have been. Thirty-one candles were lit beside an empty grave, each symbolizing a year of his life.

Waithaka, known for his skills in football, was reportedly one of many Kenyans misled by overseas job offers and subsequently forced into military service. His case is indicative of an escalating humanitarian and diplomatic issue.

Increased Demands for Government Intervention

This situation has led to heightened public and political demands for the Kenyan government to immediately halt the recruitment of Kenyans to Russia. There is a growing call for government accountability and action, as many individuals remain unaccounted for or are trapped in conflict zones.
