More than 5,000 individuals have crossed into Cameroon following the capture of Kirawa, a town in Borno state, Nigeria, by Boko Haram militants. This development marks a significant escalation in the 16-year insurgency that has intensified in recent months.

The attack commenced late on Thursday, resulting in a mass evacuation and the targeting of essential infrastructure. District Head Abdulrahman Abubakar reported that his palace was set ablaze, alongside a military barracks and several homes. He confirmed his escape to Cameroon.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility, releasing a video depicting the destruction of the barracks. Residents verified that the town is now under militant control and abandoned.

The capture of Kirawa underscores a concerning pattern of insurgent advances. Over the past year, Boko Haram and its affiliate, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have intensified their attacks, capturing multiple army bases and communities in Borno state. These gains are often temporary, as military reinforcements are deployed to reclaim lost territories.

This incident follows a similar takeover in the border town of Banki in September, contributing to a continuous exodus of displaced persons seeking refuge in Cameroon or Maiduguri, the state capital.

Local leaders are advocating for urgent military assistance. Yakubu Mabba Ali Kirawa, a community development leader, highlighted that a multinational military task force withdrew from the area after an attack in August, leaving local vigilantes and residents as the primary defense. He emphasized the need for immediate reinforcements to regain control of Kirawa and address the expanding security vacuum in the region.
