The Tunisian courts have sentenced five individuals to prison terms ranging up to 15 years in connection with the attack on the Ghriba synagogue in Djerba on May 9, 2023, which resulted in five fatalities. This information has been confirmed by a legal representative.
The assailant's fiancée received an eight-year sentence for complicity in homicide. A student involved in the case was sentenced to three years. The attacker's sister received a one-year sentence. Two additional defendants received sentences of seven and 15 years, with the latter given to a defendant who evaded justice.
On May 9, 2023, a member of the National Guard killed three colleagues at the island's port before proceeding to the synagogue, where he fatally shot two Jewish worshippers, identified as Tunisian Aviel Haddad and his French cousin Benjamin. Several officers were also injured, leading to two additional fatalities.
Two additional defendants received sentences of seven and 15 years, with the latter given to a defendant who evaded justice.
The assailant was characterized as a "lone wolf" by legal representatives. The student's mother claimed that the family had only rented accommodations to the assailant. Defense attorneys have indicated plans to appeal the sentences.
The current Jewish community in Tunisia, primarily located in Djerba, numbers approximately 1,500, significantly reduced from its historical population of over 100,000.
