Uganda Breweries Highlights Mt Elgon Catchment Restoration

Uganda Breweries Limited presented its progress on restoring the Mt Elgon catchment area during activities marking Uganda Water and Environment Week in Luzira.

The private sector's involvement in environmental projects has expanded in Uganda in recent years. The company's work on Mt Elgon forms part of broader efforts to protect vital water sources and surrounding ecosystems that support communities and agriculture across eastern Uganda.

Mt Elgon, a dormant volcano straddling the Kenya-Uganda border, is an important water catchment for rivers that feed into Lake Victoria and other basins. Degradation from agriculture, deforestation and population pressure has affected its ability to retain water and prevent soil erosion.

Uganda Breweries Limited said it has undertaken restoration activities in the catchment, though specific details of the scale and methods were not disclosed in its release. The initiative aligns with national priorities for sustainable water management and environmental protection.

The presentation occurred as part of a week-long programme organised by the Ministry of Water and Environment. Government officials, civil society groups and private companies participated in discussions and exhibitions focused on water resources, climate resilience and ecosystem restoration.

Private investment in conservation has become increasingly visible in Uganda as the country seeks to balance economic growth with environmental safeguards. Uganda Breweries Limited, a major producer of beer and other beverages, relies on consistent water supplies and has framed its Mt Elgon project as both an environmental and business sustainability measure.

The company's statement was issued on 26 March during the event in Luzira, a suburb east of Kampala. Uganda Water and Environment Week serves as an annual platform to review progress on water and environmental policies and to foster partnerships across sectors.
