Uganda Faces Uncertainty Over Biometric Kits for Local Polls
Lingering doubts persist about the reliability of controversial biometric voter verification technology following its failure in earlier national elections, as Ugandans prepare for local government voting.
Kampala, Uganda — Doubts continue to surround the use of biometric voter verification kits for Uganda’s upcoming district and city local government elections, after the technology experienced significant problems during the country’s presidential and parliamentary polls.
The Electoral Commission has yet to provide clear assurances about the functionality of the Biometric Voter Verification Kits ahead of the local elections scheduled for 22 January 2026. The kits, intended to confirm voter identities through fingerprints and other biometric data, came under intense criticism after widespread glitches marred the national elections held on 15 January 2026.
Those earlier problems included delays at polling stations and questions about the equipment’s readiness, which disrupted the voting process for many Ugandans.
