Uganda Launches Mentorship Programme for Prosecutors

Kampala, Uganda — The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has introduced a mentorship programme designed to strengthen the professional abilities of prosecutors across the country.

The initiative, developed in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, focuses on litigation, research, case preparation and legal writing. These are core competencies required for effective prosecution in Ugandan courts.

Uganda operates a common-law system inherited from British colonial rule. The Director of Public Prosecutions heads an independent office responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the state. The office handles a wide range of matters, from routine offences to complex corruption and organised crime cases.

Prosecutors in Uganda often face challenges including heavy caseloads, limited resources and the need to keep pace with evolving jurisprudence. The new programme seeks to address these issues by pairing less experienced prosecutors with mentors who can provide guidance and practical training.

The launch was announced in Kampala. According to The Independent UG, the programme forms part of broader efforts to professionalise the justice sector and improve conviction rates through better-prepared cases.

Participants will receive structured support aimed at raising standards in court advocacy and written submissions. Improved legal research skills are expected to help prosecutors handle more sophisticated arguments and adapt to new legislation.

The partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reflects international interest in strengthening rule-of-law institutions in East Africa. Similar programmes have been implemented in other countries to build prosecutorial capacity against transnational crime.

Uganda’s justice system has undergone reforms in recent years to increase efficiency and transparency. Enhancing the skills of prosecutors is seen as a critical component of these reforms, particularly as the country seeks to align its legal practices with regional and international standards.
