Uganda: tensions between police and protesters as Museveni leads polls

The Ugandan electoral commission has released early results indicating that the incumbent president, Yoweri Museveni, is leading in the presidential election. Provisional results show Museveni with over 70% of the vote, while his main challenger, Bobi Wine, holds 19%.

In the capital city of Kampala, law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse protesters and extinguished fires set in response to the election results. There were reports of an internet shutdown, voting delays, and allegations of ballot stuffing during the election process.

Bobi Wine, a musician-turned-politician, has reported significant security challenges and alleged harassment, including claims of his polling agents being abducted. President Museveni, who has been in power for 40 years, is seeking to extend his tenure.

Uganda has not experienced a peaceful transfer of power since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1962.
