Ugandan Opposition Leader Calls for Greater Public Demand for Change

Mathias Mpuuga, the national coordinator of Uganda's Democratic Front, has criticised the public for not pressing hard enough for political change.

He made the remarks while addressing party delegates in Soroti as the Democratic Front opened its new regional office for the Teso area. Mpuuga said many Ugandans have accepted poor governance and long periods in power without sufficient challenge.

The event took place in June 2025. Uganda has been led by the same president since 1986, a context many international readers may not immediately recall when assessing opposition appeals.

Mpuuga heads the Democratic Front, a relatively new opposition formation seeking to build structures across the country. The inauguration of the Teso regional office forms part of that effort to establish a stronger organisational presence outside the capital.

He argued that without active public pressure, mismanagement in public affairs would continue. The coordinator linked citizen passivity directly to the persistence of governance problems that critics have raised for years.

The Democratic Front is one of several opposition groups attempting to mobilise support ahead of future electoral cycles. Uganda's political landscape remains dominated by the long-ruling National Resistance Movement, which has faced repeated accusations of limiting political space.

Soroti lies in eastern Uganda, a region that has seen varying levels of political competition in past elections. The opening of a dedicated party office there signals an intention to compete more systematically at local level.

Mpuuga's comments reflect a recurring theme in Ugandan opposition discourse: that meaningful reform depends on ordinary citizens becoming more assertive in demanding accountability from leaders.
