Reports of Ugandan Citizens in Russian Military Recruitment

Recent reports have emerged concerning the recruitment of Ugandan citizens into the Russian military. This development comes amidst Uganda's longstanding relationship with Russia, marked by military equipment purchases and abstentions from United Nations votes condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine.

Uganda's well-trained soldiers, known for their contributions to international forces and private security firms, have reportedly been targeted by recruitment networks. An official from the Special Returnees Association indicated that veterans were misled into signing job contracts for Israel, but instead were sent to Russia. The official noted instances of Ugandans being recruited, with some reported fatalities.

In August, nine individuals were intercepted at Entebbe International Airport while en route to Russia. A Ugandan intelligence source mentioned that over 100 individuals with military experience were recruited under secrecy. Despite these revelations, actions against the networks have stalled, and a Russian citizen linked to the case was released.

Claims have been made about recruits being forced to sign military contracts under duress. In a video, a former recruit described being coerced at gunpoint into signing an army contract. This individual was later rescued by the Ukrainian army and warned others about misleading job offers in Russia.

Uganda's State Minister for Foreign Affairs stated that the government could not assist in repatriating citizens. Meanwhile, a message from Russia’s ambassador highlighted opportunities for youth in Russia, which has been met with cautionary advice from those who experienced recruitment firsthand.
