A notable aspect of the agreement is Nigeria’s acceptance of alternative identification documents, referred to as “UK letters”, for individuals lacking valid passports. This measure aims to eliminate a significant administrative obstacle that has previously delayed deportations, enabling UK authorities to process returns more efficiently.
UK government data suggests that approximately 961 Nigerians have exhausted their asylum appeal rights, and over 1,100 Nigerian offenders are currently pending deportation, indicating the potential immediate impact of the agreement.
The agreement extends beyond deportations to enhance collaboration on combating organized immigration crime. The two countries plan to share intelligence and conduct joint operations targeting networks involved in visa fraud, including fake job sponsorship schemes, sham marriages, and forged financial documents.
