The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution to enhance the mandate of the Kenya-led multinational force in Haiti, transforming it into a "Gang Suppression Force" with the authority to detain individuals suspected of gang involvement. This marks a significant change from its previous limited role.
The resolution, co-sponsored by the United States and Panama, was passed with a 12-0 vote. Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained from voting. The resolution has been officially adopted as Resolution 2793, as confirmed by South Korea’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Sangjin Kim.
The Kenya-led force began its deployment in June 2024 and is currently composed of fewer than 1,000 troops due to funding limitations, which is below the intended strength of 2,500 personnel.
The resolution, co-sponsored by the United States and Panama, was passed with a 12-0 vote.
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, gangs have gained control over 90 percent of Port-au-Prince, the capital, and have extended their influence into rural areas. This has resulted in increased incidents of kidnappings, sexual violence, and general lawlessness.
