UN chief backs Benin authorities, ECOWAS after coup attempt

The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed significant concern regarding the recent attempt to unconstitutionally seize power in Benin. In a statement delivered in New York on Tuesday, the UN spokesperson emphasized the Secretary-General's firm condemnation of actions undermining democratic governance in Benin, highlighting the potential threat to regional stability. The Secretary-General called for adherence to the rule of law and the Benin Constitution.

Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, is actively collaborating with national authorities, stakeholders, and regional and international partners to support initiatives aimed at restoring peace and stability in Benin.

The spokesperson reaffirmed the UN's commitment to aiding national and regional institutions in maintaining constitutional order within Benin and the broader region.
