The United Nations Security Council has agreed to extend the mandate of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia until the end of 2026. This mission, known as the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), assists Somali security forces in combating the militant group al-Shabab.
The UK's Ambassador to the UN emphasized the progress made in Somalia since the initial authorization of AMISOM in 2007. The Security Council is urged to maintain a comprehensive understanding of the national context to ensure effective support through AUSSOM.

Despite efforts, Somalia continues to face challenges from al-Shabab, which maintains control over some rural areas and has recaptured previously liberated zones.
