The United Nations has announced the deployment of a peacekeeping mission to Uvira in eastern DR Congo. This initiative aims to monitor compliance with the ceasefire agreement in the region.

A meeting held in Doha on Monday, involving representatives from the M23 rebel group and the Congolese government, resulted in an agreement to establish a mechanism for monitoring a "permanent ceasefire."

Uvira holds strategic significance in the region. It was initially captured by the M23/AFC rebel group during a rapid offensive in December. Subsequently, Congolese armed forces regained control of the city last month following the rebels' withdrawal.

The exact arrival date of the UN mission in Uvira is currently unspecified. However, Guatemalan soldiers participating in the mission departed their country on Saturday.
