United Nations decries crackdown on opposition ahead of Ugandan elections

United Nations' Statement on Election-Related Activities in Uganda

The United Nations has expressed concern regarding actions against opposition and media in Uganda as the country approaches its general election on Mon, Jan 15, 2024.

The UN rights agency has reported that approximately 550 individuals have been arrested and detained since the beginning of the year. This includes members and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), the main opposition party.

According to Ravina Shamdasan, spokesperson for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), there is a significant increase in arbitrary arrests, detentions, and forceful actions against the opposition. There are also concerns about restrictions on press freedom.

Allegations of Human Rights Violations

The OHCHR has noted reports of enforced disappearances, torture, and other ill-treatment of opposition supporters. Security forces have reportedly used unmarked vehicles for transporting individuals to unofficial detention centers known as "safe houses". Additionally, heavily armed security forces have been observed at NUP rally locations.

The OHCHR has urged Ugandan authorities to discontinue repressive tactics and investigate allegations of enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, and torture. It emphasized the importance of impartial investigations and accountability for those responsible.

The agency also called for the release of all detained individuals and affirmed that Ugandans should be able to participate peacefully in public affairs.

The statement highlighted concerns over press freedom, citing incidents where journalists had their accreditation withdrawn following critical reporting.

President Yoweri Museveni, currently 81 years old, is seeking to extend his 40-year rule in the upcoming elections.
