The United Nations has reported that at least 53 individuals who escaped ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have died in neighboring Burundi.
25 refugees succumbed to a cholera outbreak. Six individuals died from anemia and complications related to malnutrition. Investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of death in other cases.
Since December, over 100,000 people have fled to Burundi due to intensified fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels in the border town of Uvira.
