US delegation to join Gaza peace talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egyptian Foreign Minister says

Egypt’s Foreign Minister has confirmed that a United States delegation, led by US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, will participate in peace discussions between Israel and Hamas in Sharm el-Sheikh on Wed, Oct 8, 2025.

Badr Abdelatty stated that negotiations are progressing to implement the initial phase of US President Donald Trump's plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza.

During a press briefing in Cairo, the Foreign Minister emphasized that the discussions are primarily focused on establishing a ceasefire, along with securing the release of Israeli hostages as well as several Palestinian detainees.

The deliberations also cover the areas from which Israeli forces are expected to withdraw during the initial phase. This phase includes the “full and unconditional” provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza through the United Nations.

The objective of the negotiations is to establish a “security mechanism” that will ultimately facilitate the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

President Donald Trump remarked on Monday that there is “a really good chance” for reaching an agreement between Hamas and Israel.

The discussions coincide with the commemoration of the two-year anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on Oct 7 , which resulted in 1,200 casualties.

Israel's subsequent actions in the Gaza Strip have led to the death of over 67,000 Palestinians , as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The offensive has displaced approximately 90% of Gaza's 2 million population, with repeated displacements occurring. Restrictions on humanitarian aid have exacerbated a severe hunger crisis, and experts indicate that Gaza City is facing famine conditions.
