The United States initiated a new round of negotiations regarding the Western Sahara conflict in Washington on Mon, with participation from Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front. This meeting represents the third such engagement within the past month, following discussions held at the US embassy in Madrid earlier.
Donald Trump's Africa envoy, Massad Boulos, is overseeing the negotiations. The objective is to achieve a significant diplomatic advancement by spring.

The United States advocates for Morocco's autonomy plan as the primary framework for discussions, aligning with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 from October. The Polisario Front and Algeria, however, continue to oppose any resolution that does not include the option of self-determination.
Additional disagreements concern administrative status and identity issues. Morocco's proposal reportedly excludes official recognition of a Sahrawi identity, such as flags or an anthem, which is firmly opposed by Sahrawi representatives. The discussions are scheduled to continue privately through Tuesday.
