US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken by telephone with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni about deepening cooperation between the two countries.
According to the US State Department, the call on Thursday covered opportunities to expand partnership on migration, reciprocal trade and commercial ties. The conversation also touched on Uganda’s role in promoting stability across the East African region.
Uganda, a landlocked East African nation of more than 45 million people, has long maintained close security and diplomatic relations with Western partners. President Museveni, who has led the country since 1986, is a key figure in regional politics and has often been called upon to mediate conflicts in neighbouring states.
The discussion comes as both governments seek to broaden economic engagement. Trade between the United States and Uganda remains modest but covers sectors such as agriculture, energy and light manufacturing. Washington has previously supported Ugandan efforts to improve border management and address irregular migration flows toward Europe and the Middle East.
