Vote counting underway in Ivory Coast legislative elections amid political divisions

Vote counting is currently in progress in Ivory Coast following legislative elections aimed at electing the 255 members of the National Assembly.

The parliamentary elections occur two months after President Alassane Ouattara secured a second term with over 90% of the vote. This victory was contested by the opposition due to the exclusion of several opposition figures from the presidential race following court decisions.

These political divisions have extended to the legislative elections. The African Peoples’ Party (PPA-CI), associated with former president Laurent Gbagbo, boycotted the election, citing inadequate conditions for a credible and inclusive process.

Over 2,700 candidates participated in the polls, including nearly 800 independents. President Ouattara’s party, the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), is expected to secure a majority. The ruling party already dominates the outgoing National Assembly and fielded candidates in all constituencies nationwide.

Civil society organizations have indicated that the election results will provide an indication of the country's political balance. Koné Mamadou, chairman of the NGO Action Justice, described the vote as a test of national support for both the ruling party and the opposition.

Attention is also on the rise of a potential third political force. Founded in June 2024, ADCI aims to establish itself as an alternative bloc. The party fielded 45 candidates, many of whom are young, and seeks to gain enough seats to form a parliamentary group and influence future legislative debates.

Final results are anticipated between Mon, Dec 28, 2025, and Wed, Dec 30, 2025.
