Wife of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine in hospital after soldiers raid her house

Barbra Itungo Kyagulanyi, the wife of Ugandan opposition politician Bobi Wine, reported an overnight raid on her home by soldiers searching for her husband. She stated that during the raid, she was strangled and held at gunpoint.

According to Kyagulanyi, the soldiers targeted her home to find Bobi Wine, as his phone emitted a signal from the residence. She explained that the phone had been left behind, which led the soldiers to believe he was present.

In a statement issued on social media, Bobi Wine alleged that "hundreds of soldiers" looted his home and assaulted his wife in his absence. The soldiers reportedly demanded information about his whereabouts, physically assaulting Kyagulanyi in the process.

Following the recent presidential election, which saw Yoweri Museveni secure a seventh term, tensions have escalated. Bobi Wine has contested the election results, describing them as fraudulent.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, head of Uganda’s army and the president's son, has pledged to apprehend Wine, citing that 30 opposition supporters have been killed and 2,000 arrested since the election.

Police have detained Muwanga Kivumbi, a deputy president of Wine's National Unity Platform party, accusing him of involvement in election-related violence resulting in casualties. He is expected to face criminal charges.

Bobi Wine's legal representatives have appealed to international bodies, including the United Nations, to ensure his safety and allow his safe return to his family.

Observers noted that the election was overshadowed by an extensive internet shutdown and suppression of opposition activities. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern regarding the situation in Uganda.
