Nigeria Arraigns 24 Suspects Over Illegal Lithium Mining

Nigerian mining enforcement officers have brought legal charges against 24 individuals accused of extracting lithium without required permits in Nasarawa State.

The Mining Marshals presented the defendants before Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia at the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges related to unauthorised mining activities. The group consists of 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians.

Authorities arrested the suspects on 16 May 2026 while they were allegedly operating without lawful approval in the central Nigerian state. The case highlights ongoing efforts to regulate mineral extraction in regions known for valuable deposits.

Nasarawa State lies in Nigeria's Middle Belt, an area that has seen increased interest in lithium and other minerals in recent years. Lithium is a critical component in battery production for electric vehicles and electronic devices, driving global demand.

The Federal High Court in Abuja handles such matters as the judicial division responsible for federal offences across the country. Proceedings took place in Court 6 under the assigned judge.

Nigeria maintains strict licensing requirements for all mineral extraction activities. Unauthorised operations can result in legal action, including prosecution by specialised mining enforcement units.
