Nigeria's Senate has approved a request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a 500 million dollar loan from the World Bank. The money is earmarked to help install electricity metres in the country.
The approval came after senators considered a report from the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts. The committee's vice chairman presented the findings during the session held in May 2024.
Nigeria has long struggled with inadequate electricity supply. Many households and businesses lack accurate metering, which contributes to billing disputes and revenue shortfalls for power distribution companies.
The Bureau of Public Enterprises is set to manage the loan proceeds. The BPE oversees privatisation and reform programmes in key sectors, including energy.
