Nigerian States Support Enugu Regulator on Electricity Tariff Cut

The Forum of Commissioners of Power and Energy in Nigeria (FOCPEN) has announced its support for a decision by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) to reduce the electricity tariff for Band A customers served by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited.

The move comes despite strong objections from power generation companies, known as GenCos, which have criticised the tariff reduction. The commissioners' forum represents regulatory bodies across multiple Nigerian states responsible for power and energy matters.

Nigeria's electricity sector operates under a complex multi-tiered tariff structure. Band A customers are those who receive a higher number of hours of electricity supply each day and are charged premium rates in return. The Enugu regulator's decision to slash these rates aims to ease the financial burden on consumers in that category.

The support from FOCPEN signals a degree of alignment among state-level regulators on the need to adjust tariffs in favour of consumers, even when generation companies raise concerns about the potential impact on the sector's viability.

Nigeria's power industry has long faced challenges including inadequate generation capacity, transmission constraints and disputes over pricing between generators, distributors and regulators. State electricity regulatory commissions were established in some parts of the country following partial reforms that allowed greater sub-national involvement in the sector.

The EERC operates in Enugu State, in Nigeria's south-east geopolitical zone. Its decision and the subsequent backing from the broader commissioners' forum reflect ongoing tensions between the goal of affordable electricity for households and businesses and the financial requirements of companies that produce and distribute power.
