South Africa Regulator Expands Election Probe to Google and X
The Information Regulator has broadened its inquiry into online election transparency beyond Meta Platforms to now include Google and the social media platform X.
South Africa’s Information Regulator has widened the scope of its investigation into how major online platforms handled transparency during the country’s national elections.
The probe, which initially centred on Meta Platforms, now also encompasses Google and X, the platform owned by Elon Musk. The move reflects growing official concern over the role of digital services in shaping voter information in Africa’s most industrialised economy.
South Africa held its national and provincial elections in May 2024. The vote marked the first time since the end of apartheid that the African National Congress lost its outright majority, forcing it into a coalition government.
The Information Regulator, an independent state body responsible for data protection and access to information, launched the inquiry to assess whether the platforms had provided adequate transparency around content moderation, political advertising and the spread of disinformation during the election period.
