MTN Uganda Donates Beds to Support Vulnerable Students

MTN Uganda has donated beds and mattresses to a local organisation that supports vulnerable schoolchildren in the central Ugandan district of Kyankwanzi.

The handover, carried out through the company’s MTN Foundation, involved items valued at 20 million shillings. The recipient, St. Joseph’s Aid Society, is a community-based group focused on improving the welfare of learners facing hardship in the area.

Kyankwanzi District lies in the cattle corridor of Uganda’s Central Region, an area where many families rely on subsistence farming and face challenges in accessing quality education infrastructure. Boarding facilities in rural schools often lack basic amenities, making such donations particularly relevant for improving learning conditions.

The company described the contribution as part of its wider efforts to support education and community development across Uganda. MTN Uganda, one of the country’s leading mobile network operators, has run similar initiatives in other regions through its foundation.

St. Joseph’s Aid Society works directly with schools and families to address the needs of children who might otherwise struggle to remain in education. The new beds and mattresses are expected to enhance accommodation for learners at facilities supported by the organisation.

Uganda’s education sector continues to grapple with resource gaps, especially in rural districts where government funding for dormitories and hostels is limited. Private sector contributions remain an important supplement to public efforts in such contexts.

The donation was completed in May 2024. No further details on the exact number of beds or the specific schools targeted were made public.
